This combination of these two popular mountains in Cordillera Blanca region, is a great climbing trip for mountaineers to get experience in the mountain climbing and expeditions world. This program allows for a solid acclimatization process that provides you the best chance to reach one of the easiest 6000 m peak in this range.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Lima.
Transfer to a local hotel located in the Miraflores neighborhood.
Day 2: Travel to Huaraz 3000 m - 9842 ft
You will access a service bus (7 hrs) from Lima to Huaraz or fly into Huaraz (check LCPeru.com for available flights). Huaraz is a gorgeous Andean town and considered a mountaineering Mecca for climbers from all over the world. Your guide will pick you up at the bus station or airport and take you to the hotel. This day, as you'll get into town early in the morning, we'll relax and start the acclimatization process with a small hike in the afternoon. We will run a gear check in the evening.
Day 3: Churup Lake 4300 m – 14,107 ft
This day we'll continue to acclimatize . We’ll drive for a couple of hours to the trail head and see first the spectacular turquoise Churup Lake. After hiking for another 3 hrs we'll arrive at our destination. We’ll enjoy the unique view of the range and hike down to the car park. We’ll drive back to Huaraz and stay at the same hotel.
Day 4: Lake 69 4550 m - 14,904 ft
In our second full acclimating day, we'll start very early in the morning from Huaraz (7:00am), jump in the car, and drive east toward Callejon del Huaylas, a remote valley that connects most of the Cordillera Blanca range. We'll head up to Yanganuco National park, drive for about three hrs and get to the Cebollapampa camp site at 3850 m (12,631 ft), where we'll start the hike following a well marked trail that leads to Lake 69. The hike is about 3-4 hrs, and you’ll see one of the most beautiful lakes in the area surrounded by many famous snowed peaks like, Chacraraju, Huandoys, Pisco, Yanapaccha, Chopicalqui, and the big mountain Huascaran. After enjoying the view and eating lunch, we'll head back to the trailhead where we'll set our base camp in Cebollapampa valley.
Day 5: Pisco Hut 4500 m – 14,763 ft
Today, we'll start with an early breakfast and hike west. We'll meet the donkey driver and porters before hiking 3 hrs to a big plateau where the hut is located, surrounded by snowed peaks. We'll spend the night at this hut.
Day 6: Advanced Base Camp 4850 m – 15,980 ft
This day we have an easy start. After a late breakfast, we will pack up for the porters that will help us move the climbing and camping gear to the moraine base camp at 4850 m (15,980 ft) where we will spend a night before the summit bid. Night in tents.
Day 7: Pisco Summit 5750 m – 18,860 ft.
Today we'll have the first early alpine start, at approximately 3:00 am. We'll hike on the moraine for 30 minutes following a rocky path that ends at the glacier entrance. We'll climb for another 4 hrs up a 30 to 45 degree slope to reach the summit. From the summit on a clear day, it is possible to enjoy a fantastic view of the surrounding peaks like Huascaran, Chopicalqui, Cracraraju, and other astonishing and sharp-sloped peaks. After appreciating the stunning views, we'll head down to the advanced base camp, get some rest, pack our stuff, and continue down to the hut. Night at the hut.
Day 8: Cebollapamba-Chopicalqui Base Camp 4100 m – 13,451 ft.
This day, after a late breakfast, we'll head down to Cebollapamba where our private transportation will take us to Chopicalqui base camp where we’ll pitch our tents. Night in tents.
Day 9: Rest and recovery day 4100 m – 13,451 ft.
This day we'll spend in the base camp, resting and recovering for the next climb.
Day 10: Moraine Base Camp 4900 m – 16,076 ft.
After a good breakfast we will pack and organize the climbing gear for the porters and hike about 4-5 hours to reach the moraine base camp. Night in tents.
Day 11: Advanced Base Camp 5500 m – 18,040 ft.
This day we'll head up to a snowfield. We'll hike for an hour and reach the glacier entrance. After another 3 hours we'll arrive to a flat snowfield where we'll pitch out tents.
Day 12: Chopicalqui Summit Day 6354 m – 20,846 ft.
This day is our summit bid, with an early start 1:00 am. We'll start gearing up and climb a steep slope for about 5-6 hrs to reach the summit of Chopicalqui. After celebrating our big achievement, taking pictures, and enjoying the view, we will return to camp, break it down, and head back to the moraine base camp where we’ll spend the night.
Day 13: Moraine Camp-Huaraz
We'll start the day at 8am and hike down to the entrance for about 3 hours. Transportation will be waiting to take us back to Huraz.
Day 14: Travel to Lima in the morning and fly out at night.
